How is activated carbon made and methods to check the quality of carbon active para tratamiento de agua?

Being a very powerful adsorbent, activated carbon is commonly used for water filtration for removing undesirable components and contaminants. Apart from water filtration, this substance is also used for 1,000 other applications. Right from water purification to gold-mining, activated carbon is customized to fulfill a variety of needs.

Did you know carbon filters have the capacity to remove 81 chemicals and reduce around 52 chemicals from water? Well, this is something that no other filter media will be able to do. Apart from that, it’s also capable of removing 14 pesticides, 12 herbicides (identified), and 32 organic contaminants (identified).

Be it the filtration of commercial and industrial wastewater or odor/air issues;Carbon active para tratamiento de aguais prevalently used. And the reason behind carbon being an amazing adsorbent is it’s extremely porous and has a wider surface area for absorbing contaminants.

How is it made?

For water filtration, there are mainly two types of activated carbon that are used for water filtration. One is Granular activated carbon (GAC), and the other is Powdered activated carbon (PAC). Now let’s understand in detail how both the activated carbons are made.

• GAC- GAC is the product of organic materials possessing carbon contents in high amounts such as coal, wood, and lignite. Based on the manufacturing process and materials used, the GAC has a 1.2 to 1.6mm diameter and a density ranging from 25 to 32 lb. Also, it has a pretty large uniformity coefficient, i.e., 1.9, for promoting stratification post-backwashing. It’s also intended to reduce premature breakthrough and desorption, which is caused due to the mixing of activated carbon with small amounts of adsorbed compounds.
In order to characterize this type of activated carbon, molasses and Iodine are used. GAC is considered the best for Carbon active para tratamiento de aguaas it’s configured for solid removal and turbidity along with biological stabilization.
• PAC- This is also extracted from organic materials having carbon content in a very high amount, such as coal, wood, and lignite. Along with a diameter of 0.1 mm, it’s apparent density ranges from 23 to 46 lb, and this entirely depends upon the manufacturing process and materials used. PAC as Carbon active para tratamiento de aguais used in the slurry or powder form through dry feed equipment.
When it’s required in a high dosage, then PAC is used in the slurry form is required. It is added early into the process of treatment and is consequently removed by either backwashing filter beds or by sedimentation.

How to check the quality of the activated carbon?

In the field of environmental management, carbon active para tratamiento de aguais widely popular. However, when one considers the ability to remove unwanted substances, there are various differences among carbon products. There are a lot of factors that influence the quality of activated carbon. Therefore, it’s important to verify the quality before opting for it.

To determine its capacity to remove unwanted substances or contaminants, one should look beyond its volume or weight. Another way to determine its ability is by considering its Adsorption capacity. This capacity is referred to as the volume of impurities sucked out by a particular amount of activated carbon. Therefore, the higher the adsorption capacity, the better will be the results.

For the manufacturing of carbon active para tratamiento de agua, various quality specifications and different raw materials are used. With reactivated carbon, quality is an issue. Proper operation and careful & close monitoring determine the ability of reactive carbon to decontaminate the untreated or wastewater. Also, point to be noted, the adsorption capacity is based on a careful and precisely regulated process of steam activation.

So, two stringent tests have been developed by the ASTM and carbon manufacturing industry that predicts the cost-effectiveness along with measuring the reactivated and virgin carbon products. They are:

• Iodine Adsorption Test: ASTM D460 is used to measure the slurry phase of activated carbon, which produces numbers of Iodine Adsorption from eight hundred to twelve hundred mg/g. Its number is directly proportional to its capacity. The higher is the number, the greater will be its capacity.
• Carbon Tetrachloride Adsorption Test: This test is intended to measure the vapor phase of activated carbon, which produces numbers of carbon tetrachloride from weighing forty-five to seventy percent.

Apart from the above-mentioned tests, there is another important test that measures the efficiency of removing chlorine. Though the presence of chlorine in water isn’t harmful to health, it still needs to be eliminated as it can change the odor and taste of water. Carbons are evaluated depending upon the half-life length dichlorination. In this process, the amount of carbon needed to remove the chlorine content is measured, which is from 5 ppm to 3.5 ppm. For superior performance, a lower length of half-value is preferable.

Hence, whenever you’re headed to buy either the reactivated or virgin carbon products, confirm that the above-mentioned adsorption numbers or characteristics are mentioned. After that, make sure to compare them to the CARBTROL’s so that you get the best carbon active para tratamiento de agua.

Conclusion

Except for activated carbon, no other filter is strong and effective enough to remove every contaminant from it. If you start talking about the versatility of activated carbon, it is going to take ages to complete.Apart from making it drinkable, carbon filters also make sure that they do not strip the water of profitable compounds such as minerals from it.
