Keiken, disruptive technologies in desalination processes
One of the R&D KEIKEN projects consists of a "Sustainable Desalination plant wing for efficient water and energy management cycle", based on the technology of distillation with membrane hybridized with renewable energies, which has obtained the official certification of IBEROEKA Project. Membrane distillation is a process of thermal desalination of seawater and brackish water, in which water vapor molecules pass through the pores of a hydrophobic membrane, leaving behind the salt molecules and other particles. The driving current is generated by the difference of vapor pressures on both sides of the hydrophobic membrane caused by a temperature difference between both sides of the membrane.

On the other hand, the desalination by adsorption being also a process of thermal desalination of seawater and brackish, differs from the previous technology in this case there is no membrane, but is used a selective sorbate with water vapor. East adsorbate allows the generation of vacuum without having to generate it mechanically, thus reducing the boiling temperature of seawater and reducing drastically energy consumption compared to conventional processes of thermal desalination, MSF and MED. This process consists of 3 stages: evaporation in vacuum, adsorption and condensation.
These technologies proposed by KEIKEN are alternative processes to conventional desalination treatments such as reverse osmosis (RO), and can reduce considerably the energy consumption per cubic metre of water produced (< 1 kwh/m3 water produced), working at lower operating pressure (< 2 bar), operate with very high salinities without pressure increases, with lower need for pretreatment and lower dosages of chemical products and maintaining or increasing the quality of the water generated, as That 100% of solids and non-volatile matter are rejected. To increase the reduction of the plant consumption with these alternative technologies, it is proposed the hybridization of the feeding with Renovable Energies, getting some additional advantages: they are very sustainable technologies and reduce significantly energy demand and carbon footprint.
